Door topper ideas for every household this Christmas, plus how to choose the right size and colour so it actually fits.
Door toppers have quietly become one of the most popular small gifts we make. They are freestanding words that sit on the ledge above a door frame, and they turn a plain doorway into something with a bit of personality. With Christmas coming, here is a practical guide to choosing a door topper as a present: who it suits, which wording works, and how to make sure it actually fits.
What is a door topper sign?
A door topper is a 3D-printed word or phrase designed to stand on top of a door frame, or on a shelf. Ours are printed in North Wales and made to order, and most designs come in three sizes, 20cm, 30cm and 38.5cm, in a choice of colours. You can browse the whole range in our door toppers collection.
Because there are no screws or fixings, they suit renters and anyone who would rather not put holes in the wall. The one thing you do need is a suitable ledge above the door, which we cover below.
Why they work as Christmas gifts
- They are personal without being precious. A phrase that someone always says, or a room name the family uses, lands better than a generic ornament.
- They post easily. A slim sign is simpler to send to friends and family than something bulky or fragile.
- There is a price point for most budgets. The ready-made designs featured below are £14.99 each, which sits nicely in Secret Santa and stocking-filler territory for adults.
Door topper ideas by person
For the family that says it every morning
The Love You Bye door topper is designed for the front door or hallway, as a little send-off for everyone heading out. It is a warm choice for parents, grandparents or a couple who have just moved in together.
For the friend who never leaves quietly
The Dramatic Exit door topper is for the theatre lover, the household drama queen or the colleague who makes an occasion of leaving a room. It works over a bedroom, dressing room or office door.
For the reader or homebody
The Nook gives a reading corner, snug or quiet room its own name. It is a gentle, non-jokey option if you are buying for someone whose sense of humour you are not sure about.
For the person who is impossible to buy for
Write your own. The personalised custom door topper lets you choose the wording: a family nickname, a room name such as "The Reading Room", a pet's name or an inside joke. Keep it short so it reads clearly from across the room, and check spelling, spaces and punctuation carefully before ordering.
For friends with a ruder sense of humour
We also make a range of cheeky and sweary designs. They are best kept for people you know well, and they are all in the main funny gifts collection alongside other novelty presents.
How to choose the right size
This is the bit people skip, and it matters. Before ordering:
- Measure the ledge above the door. The topper needs a flat surface to stand on. Door frames vary a lot, especially between older and newer houses.
- Check the clearance to the ceiling. Some doorways have very little space above the frame.
- Match the size to the doorway. As a rough rule, a 20cm topper suits a narrow ledge or shelf, while the 38.5cm size is more of a statement over a wider internal door. If in doubt, measure and compare.
If you are buying as a surprise and cannot measure, a shelf is a safe fallback. Door toppers stand happily on a bookcase or mantelpiece too.
Picking a colour
Contrast is usually more readable than matching. A dark topper stands out on a white frame; a light one shows up against painted or wooden frames. If you know the room, choose the colour that will be visible from the doorway rather than the one that blends in.
Ordering in time for Christmas
Every topper is made to order. Allow around one to three working days for production, and UK delivery is usually one to three working days after dispatch. Exact delivery cost and estimated timing are shown at checkout. Personalised wording takes the same production time, but it is worth ordering early in December so there is room to spare.
