A door topper is a small sign that sits on the ledge above a door frame. That's it. No drilling, no brackets, no filling holes when you move out. And yet it's the single cheapest change you can make to a room that people actually notice — the last thing you read on the way out and the first thing a guest clocks on the way in.

They've quietly become our biggest-selling category, and the questions we get asked are almost always the same three: what size do I need, will it actually stay up, and what should it say? This guide answers all three properly, with real measurements, a fitting method that takes about a minute, and more than 50 genuine wording ideas grouped by room and occasion.

What exactly is a door topper?

A door topper (sometimes called a door frame sign or over-door sign) is a freestanding lettered sign designed to rest on the horizontal ledge created by the architrave at the top of an internal door frame. It leans very slightly back against the wall, gravity does the rest, and nothing is fixed to the door, the frame or the paintwork.

Because it isn't attached to anything, a door topper is one of the very few pieces of decor that works in a rented flat, a student room, a new build with warranty conditions, or a hallway you don't want to put another hole in. It also means you can move it, swap it seasonally, or take it with you.

The same sign will happily sit on a shelf, a mantelpiece, a windowsill or the top of a picture frame — which is worth knowing if you buy one for a door and later decide it looks better somewhere else.

Door topper sizes: the UK fitting guide

This is the part almost nobody explains, so here it is in full.

Standard UK internal door widths

Before you choose a topper size, it helps to know what you're working with. UK internal doors are still sold in imperial sizes with metric equivalents, and these are the common ones:

Two things worth adding. First, Scotland does it slightly differently — 726mm is the common width there, and Scottish doors tend to be a touch taller and 40mm thick rather than the 35mm you'll usually find in England and Wales. Second, the standard internal door height across the UK is 1981mm (6'6"), which means the ledge you're putting your topper on is roughly at eye level for most people. Whatever you choose is going to be read, so choose something worth reading.

Which topper size for which door?

Our toppers come in three sizes: 20cm, 30cm and 38.5cm wide. The rule that consistently looks right is that the sign should span somewhere between a third and a half of the door's width. Any narrower and it looks lost above a wide frame; any wider and it starts to overhang the architrave, which is both visually awkward and less stable.

A practical note on wording length: the longer the phrase, the smaller each letter has to be at any given width. A two-word topper like Man Cave reads beautifully at 20cm. Something like Wash Your Hands, You Filthy Animal wants 30cm or 38.5cm to stay legible from across a hallway. If you're personalising with a longer phrase or a full name, size up.

How to measure yours in 60 seconds

1. Measure the door width, not the frame. Open the door and measure across the face of the door leaf itself, edge to edge. That's the figure the table above uses.
2. Check the ledge. Stand back, look at the top of the door frame, and find the flat horizontal surface on top of the architrave — the moulding that frames the doorway. That ledge is what your topper stands on.
3. Measure its depth. Standard UK architrave is supplied in 15mm, 18mm or 25mm thicknesses (usually 70mm or 95mm wide on the face). Anything from about 15mm upwards gives you a comfortable, stable shelf.
4. Check for a skew. Older houses settle. Rest a spirit level or a phone level on the architrave. If it's noticeably off, a small blob of removable adhesive putty behind the base keeps the topper honest.

What if there's no ledge?

Some doorways genuinely won't take a topper, and it's better to know before you order. The three you'll come across are: uPVC and composite front doors with flush frames, modern "shadow gap" or plaster-in door linings finished flush with the wall, and archways with no frame at all.

You've still got options. Fit a slim floating shelf about 5–10cm above the frame and stand the topper on that; sit it on the picture rail if the room has one; or simply relocate it to a bookshelf, mantelpiece or windowsill, where these signs look just as good. Materials: what door toppers are actually made from

Most UK door toppers fall into one of four material camps, and they genuinely behave differently. Here's an honest comparison, including where ours sit.

We print in PLA for two specific reasons. The first is depth: a 3D printed letter has real thickness, so it throws a shadow and reads clearly from across a room in a way a flat cut-out simply doesn't. The second is colour. Because the colour is in the material rather than painted on, there's no edge that shows a different shade, nothing to chip, and we can offer 23 options rather than the handful most sheet-based makers keep in stock — everything from White, Black, Silver and Grey through Gold, Magenta, Pine Green and Dark Blue.

PLA is also very light, which matters more than it sounds: a lighter sign sits happily on a shallow architrave ledge without wanting to tip. Our toppers are designed for indoor use — hallways, bedrooms, kitchens, offices and studios.

Every door topper we sell is designed and 3D printed by us in North Wales, on the Denbighshire coast. There's no third-party factory, no drop-shipper and no container arriving from overseas — the printers are ours, the filament is ours, and the person packing your order is the person who printed it.

Choosing a colour

With 23 colours available, the most common mistake is overthinking it. Three approaches that reliably work:

• Match the woodwork. White on white architrave, or black on black. It reads as architecture rather than decoration — subtle, and very hard to get wrong.
• Contrast hard. Black lettering above white gloss architrave, or White above a dark heritage-painted frame. Maximum legibility, maximum impact.
• Pull a colour from the room. Match the topper to a cushion, a lampshade or a print you already own. Pine Green, Dark Blue and Magenta are the ones people reach for most.

If in doubt: Black on a light frame, White on a dark one. It works every time.

Frequently asked questions

How do door toppers attach to the door?

They don't — and that's the point. A door topper rests on the flat ledge on top of the architrave (the moulding around the door frame), leaning very slightly back against the wall. There are no screws, no brackets and no adhesive required. Ours are 3D printed in lightweight PLA specifically so they sit comfortably on a shallow ledge.

Will a door topper damage the door or the frame?

No. Because nothing is drilled, screwed or glued, there's nothing to fill or repaint when you take it down. That makes door toppers one of the very few decor items that are genuinely landlord-proof, which is why they're such a popular gift for anyone renting or in student accommodation.

Do door toppers fit all doors?

Almost all internal doors, yes — as long as there's a ledge on top of the frame. Standard UK architrave is 15mm, 18mm or 25mm thick, and any of those gives a stable shelf. The exceptions are uPVC and composite front doors with flush frames, modern plaster-in linings finished level with the wall, and open archways. In those cases a slim floating shelf above the doorway, a picture rail, a bookshelf or a mantelpiece all work perfectly.

What size door topper do I need?

Aim for roughly a third to a half of the door's width. For the most common UK internal door (762mm / 2'6") that's our 30cm topper, or 38.5cm if you want a bolder statement. For narrower doors of 610–686mm, 20cm is the better proportion. For 813–838mm doors, go to 38.5cm.

Will it fall off when the door slams?

On a level architrave of 15mm or more, a lightweight PLA topper stays put through normal use. If your house has settled and the frame sits slightly off level — or you have teenagers — a pea-sized blob of removable adhesive putty behind the base solves it completely and peels off cleanly later.

Can I have my own wording?

Yes. Every design in the range has a personalisation box on its product page. Type in the wording you want and that's what we print. Shorter phrases give you larger letters, so if you want maximum impact keep it under about 15 characters, or size up to 30cm or 38.5cm for longer text.

How long does personalisation take, and when will it arrive?

Because every topper is printed to order, our average turnaround is 2–5 working days, though this can extend slightly during busy periods such as Christmas. UK orders then typically arrive 1–3 working days after dispatch. Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on your location, order size and chosen delivery method. Can I return a personalised door topper?

We can't accept returns or cancellations on personalised or custom-made items unless they arrive damaged, defective, or with an error we've made. Non-personalised items can be returned within 14 days of receipt if unused and in their original packaging. Because we start production shortly after an order is placed, please double-check your spelling before you add to basket.

Can I use a door topper outside?

They're designed for indoor use — hallways, bedrooms, kitchens, home offices and studios. A porch or a covered internal doorway is fine; an exposed exterior door frame isn't the right home for one.

How much do door toppers cost?

Ours start at £14.99 for the 20cm size, £18.99 for 30cm and £23.99 for 38.5cm, with a small number of more detailed designs priced slightly higher (up to £25.99). Personalisation is included — there's no surcharge for custom wording.
