    Aberdeen earned the nickname Granite City from the local stone used for many of its buildings, which sparkles in the sun. Marischal College is often described as one of the largest granite buildings in the world. The city lies between the mouths of the rivers Dee and Don and became a centre of the North Sea oil industry from the 1970s. The University of Aberdeen was founded in 1495, and the old fishing village of Footdee, known as Fittie, sits at the harbour mouth, where bottlenose dolphins can often be spotted.
