    Ski resorts mark their runs by difficulty, though the colours vary by region. In Europe, green and blue runs are for beginners, red for intermediates and black for experts, while North American resorts use green circles, blue squares and black diamonds. A sign carrying a favourite run, a family surname or an invented trail name makes a playful souvenir for anyone who lives for the mountains.
