    Antananarivo, often shortened to Tana, is the capital of Madagascar and is built across a series of hills in the central highlands. Its name means 'city of the thousand', said to recall a thousand soldiers who guarded it. The Rova, the former palace of the Merina monarchs, stands on the highest hill. In October and November, jacaranda trees bloom purple around Lake Anosy. Madagascar is famous for wildlife found nowhere else on Earth, including lemurs, and the city is the starting point for trips to its rainforests and baobab-lined roads.
