    For almost three decades Berlin was split in two by the Berlin Wall, which stood from 1961 until it fell in November 1989. A long stretch survives as the East Side Gallery, covered in murals, along the River Spree. The Brandenburg Gate, once stranded beside the Wall, is now the symbol of reunified Germany, and the Reichstag building has a glass dome by Norman Foster that visitors can walk up inside. Museum Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the former Tempelhof airport is now a vast public park.
