    Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province and is famous as the home of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The city is known for Sichuan cuisine, with its numbing peppercorns and spicy hotpot, and UNESCO named it a City of Gastronomy in 2010. Locals while away hours in traditional teahouses, especially in People's Park. Wuhou Shrine and the old Jinli street recall the Three Kingdoms period, and the ancient Dujiangyan irrigation system lies just outside the city. Its old nickname, the Land of Abundance, refers to the fertile Sichuan basin around it.
