    Kuala Lumpur grew up in the 19th century where the Klang and Gombak rivers meet, and its name means 'muddy confluence' in Malay. The Petronas Twin Towers, linked by a skybridge, were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004. Just north of the city, a giant golden statue of Lord Murugan stands at the foot of the steps up to the Batu Caves. Merdeka Square is where Malayan independence was declared in 1957. Jalan Alor is famous for its evening food stalls, and KL Tower offers views over the skyline.
