    Niagara Falls is made up of three waterfalls on the Niagara River, which forms part of the border between the United States and Canada. Horseshoe Falls, the largest, carries most of the water, while the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie on the US side. Boats have taken visitors close to the base of the falls since the 1840s. In 1859 the tightrope walker Charles Blondin crossed the gorge downstream on a rope, and the falls are lit up in colour at night.
