    Oakland sits across the bay from San Francisco, linked to it by the Bay Bridge, which opened in 1936. At its heart is Lake Merritt, which became the first designated wildlife refuge in the United States in 1870. Writer Jack London grew up in the city, and Jack London Square on the waterfront bears his name. The Golden State Warriors won NBA championships in 2015, 2017 and 2018 while playing at Oakland's arena, and the Black Panther Party was founded in the city in 1966. The restored Art Deco Fox Theater is a popular concert venue.
