    Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 on sand dunes next to the ancient port of Jaffa, with which it was later merged. Its White City has more than 4,000 buildings in the Bauhaus and International styles and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003. Rothschild Boulevard is lined with trees and cafés, and the Carmel Market is crowded with food stalls. A long promenade runs along the Mediterranean beaches. The old stone lanes of Jaffa, with its clock tower and flea market, are a short walk south.
