    Pine-green in more ways than one: this Welcome to Washington sign shows "Welcome to Washington" and "The Evergreen State" in white capitals on a green panel outlined by a slim white border. It is a fixed design, with the wording exactly as you see it.

    The nickname refers to the dense evergreen forests that cover much of the state, from the Olympic Peninsula to the Cascades. Washington is the only US state named after a president, and its capital is Olympia rather than Seattle, which surprises plenty of visitors.
