    The Acropolis is a rocky outcrop above the centre of Athens, crowned by temples from the city's golden age in the 5th century BC. The Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena, was completed in 432 BC. Beside it stands the Erechtheion, whose porch is held up by six maidens known as the Caryatids, and visitors still enter through the monumental Propylaia gateway. The site became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, and the Acropolis Museum opened at its foot in 2009.
