    Athens has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years, and in the 5th century BC it became the birthplace of democracy. The Parthenon, built on the Acropolis in honour of the goddess Athena, still dominates the skyline. Below it, the Plaka district winds with old lanes and tavernas, and the Ancient Agora was the heart of public life in the city. The first modern Olympic Games were held at the marble Panathenaic Stadium in 1896. Lycabettus Hill offers sunset views across the city to the port of Piraeus and the sea.
