    Amalfi was once the capital of a powerful maritime republic that traded across the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages. Its cathedral, dedicated to St Andrew, has a striking striped facade at the top of a grand flight of steps. The Amalfi Coast became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Terraced lemon groves cling to the cliffs, and the fruit is used to make limoncello. A winding coastal road links the town with Positano to the west, while Ravello, known for its gardens and music festival, sits in the hills above. The Path of the Gods, a famous hiking trail, runs high above the coast nearby.
