    A city that was once the intellectual heart of the medieval world is the subject of this Baghdad map art print. Its streets along the Tigris are drawn in elegant graphic lines, a meaningful gift for anyone with Iraqi roots.

    Baghdad was founded in 762 by the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur as a round city on the banks of the Tigris. Under the Abbasids it grew into one of the largest cities in the world and a great centre of learning, home to the famous House of Wisdom. Many of the tales of the Thousand and One Nights are set in the Baghdad of the caliph Harun al-Rashid. Al-Mutanabbi Street is lined with booksellers, and the 13th-century Mustansiriya Madrasa is one of the oldest surviving university buildings in the world.
