    Modern baseball owes much to the Knickerbocker rules drawn up in New York in 1845. The bases sit 90 feet apart around the diamond, and each team gets three outs per inning over nine innings. The World Series has been played since 1903, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame opened in Cooperstown, New York, in 1939. Babe Ruth became the sport's first great superstar, and in 2019 the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox played the first Major League games in Europe at the London Stadium.
