    The first organised indoor ice hockey game is generally traced to the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal in 1875. The Stanley Cup, donated in 1892 by Lord Stanley of Preston, then Governor General of Canada, is the oldest trophy competed for by professional teams in North America. Each side has six players on the ice, including the goaltender, and the puck is a disc of hard rubber three inches across. Wayne Gretzky earned the nickname the Great One, and in Britain the Elite Ice Hockey League draws big crowds in cities such as Belfast, Cardiff, Sheffield and Nottingham. Players can be sent to the penalty box for two minutes, which hands the other team a power play.
