    The Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge universities was first held in 1829 and is now rowed over 4.2 miles of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake. Henley Royal Regatta has been held every summer since 1839. Sir Steve Redgrave won gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games, from 1984 to 2000. Rowers who use two oars each are sculling, while those with one oar are sweep rowing, and in many crews a cox steers and calls the rhythm. Olympic races are held over 2,000 metres, and many boat clubs welcome adult beginners, so it is never too late to try the sport.
