    New York is the most populous city in the United States, split into Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Manhattan's street grid, laid out in 1811, is broken by Broadway running on a diagonal and by Central Park, which stretches more than 50 blocks through the middle of the island. The Brooklyn Bridge opened across the East River in 1883, and the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, was dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886. From Times Square to the High Line, few cities are as recognisable from above.
