    Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is widely seen as the birthplace of the Renaissance. Brunelleschi's dome crowns the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, and the Uffizi Gallery holds masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo and Raphael. Michelangelo's David stands in the Galleria dell'Accademia. The Ponte Vecchio, lined with jewellers' shops, has crossed the Arno since medieval times. The powerful Medici family ruled the city for generations and funded many of its treasures, and the historic centre is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
