    San Diego is often called the birthplace of California: in 1769 Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the first of the state's 21 missions. Balboa Park, developed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, is home to museums, gardens and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. The aircraft carrier USS Midway is now a museum on the waterfront, and Comic-Con has been held in the city since 1970. Across the bay, the Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888, and sea lions laze on the rocks at La Jolla Cove.
