    San Francisco sits at the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, and its cable cars are the last manually operated cable car system in the world. Out in the bay lies Alcatraz, once a federal prison. Lombard Street is famous for its hairpin bends, and the Victorian houses known as the Painted Ladies line Alamo Square. Much of the city was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and fire.
