    Sunshine, surf and the Golden Gate: this Welcome to California sign brings the West Coast indoors. "Welcome to California" and "The Golden State" sit in white type on a green, road-sign-style panel framed by a thin white border, and the wording is fixed as shown.

    The nickname goes back to the Gold Rush, which began when gold was found at Sutter's Mill in 1848 and drew hundreds of thousands of fortune seekers west.
