    Skateboarding began in California in the 1950s, when surfers fitted wheels to boards so they could carve the pavement on days with no waves, a pastime nicknamed sidewalk surfing. In the 1970s Alan Gelfand invented the ollie, the jump that underpins most modern tricks, and empty swimming pools became the first bowls. Tony Hawk landed the first 900, two and a half spins in the air, at the 1999 X Games. The sport made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games, held in 2021, with street and park events.
