    Mont Saint-Michel is a rocky tidal island where Normandy meets Brittany, crowned by a Benedictine abbey whose spire rises high above the bay. The tides here are among the strongest in Europe, and at high water the mount can become a true island. The old causeway was replaced by a light bridge in 2014 so that the sea could flow freely around it again. The mount and its bay have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, and a single narrow street winds up through the village. Millions of people visit each year, making it one of the most popular sights in France.
