    Louis XIV transformed a royal hunting lodge into the Palace of Versailles and moved the court there in 1682. Its Hall of Mirrors is lined with 357 mirrors, and the Treaty of Versailles was signed there in 1919, formally ending the First World War. The vast formal gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre, are filled with fountains and long avenues. In the grounds stand the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon and Marie Antoinette's rustic hamlet. The palace and park have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. The town itself grew up around the palace, with broad avenues leading to its gates.
