    Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan and the largest city in Central Asia. It was an important stop on the Silk Road, and much of the city was rebuilt after a powerful earthquake in 1966. The Tashkent Metro, opened in 1977, was the first in Central Asia, and its stations are decorated with chandeliers, marble and mosaics. Chorsu Bazaar sits under a huge blue dome. The Hazrati Imam complex holds an early copy of the Quran said to date from the 7th century. Amir Timur Square honours the medieval conqueror.
