    Lake country gets its due in this Welcome to Minnesota sign, which prints "Welcome to Minnesota" and "The North Star State" in white lettering on a green, road-style panel with a narrow white border. The wording is fixed as pictured.

    The nickname comes from the state motto, L'Étoile du Nord, French for "the star of the north", a nod to Minnesota being the northernmost state in the contiguous US. It is also called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, a modest claim given there are more than 11,000. The Mississippi River begins at Lake Itasca, Saint Paul is the capital, and Minneapolis sits just across the river. It is ideal for anyone who has spent summers at a cabin up north or winters ice fishing.
